Giants pull out win in sloppy contest

It wasn't pretty, but the '86 Giants will happily take their 31-28 victory over the '96 Packers in their Super League opener.

The Giants turned the ball over three times. Joe Morris rushed for just 17 yards on 16 carries. Edgar Bennett (121 yards rushing) had little trouble slicing through Lawrence Taylor on the New York defense.

But Green Bay was just as error-prone with three turnovers of its own. Brett Favre's second interception of the game with 4 minutes, 55 seconds left set up the winning drive. Phil Simms, who already had thrown four touchdown passes, drove New York into Green Bay territory, and Raul Allegre booted a 42-yard field with 21 seconds left for the victory.

Simms completed 14 of 23 passes, including TD passes to Bobby Johnson, Morris, Phil McConkey and backup tight end Zeke Mowatt.

Favre was sacked just three times but was constantly hounded by LT and the New York defense. He completed 20 of 37 passes for just 215 yards.
