The passing game isn't supposed to be the strength of the 1986 New York Giants.
So far in Super League action, however, it's been the key to the team's hot start. Phil Simms threw for 295 yards as the Giants beat the 1989 San Francisco 49ers 21-20 in Week 2 action. The Giants improved to 2-0 while the 49ers fell to 1-1.
Simms, who threw for four touchdowns in Week 1, led the Giants on their game-winning drive midway through the fourth quarter, connecting on two 25-yard passes with Bobby Johnson (who finished with five catches for 111 yards) and twice with tight end Mark Bavaro (eight catches for 93 yards). Joe Morris plunged in from 2 yards out for the winning score.
Not that the Giants' defense wasn't effective, holding the 49ers to 274 yards. The New York defense didn't sack Joe Montana, but constant pressure forced the Niners into a short passing game. Montana finished 15-for-26 for 146 yards and TD passes to Jerry Rice and John Taylor.
