Giants surprise Steelers with late drive

The 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers were one tackle away from wrapping up a Super League victory over the 1986 Giants.

But it's not easy to bring down Mark Bavaro.

The Giants faced fourth-and-10 from their own 48 with 87 seconds remaining in the game, trailing 19-16. New York quarterback Phil Simms connected with the tight end -- but a yard short of the first down. Bavaro, however, managed to bull his way forward for an extra 2 yards to keep the drive alive, muscling through linebacker Jack Ham. Four plays later, Simms found Bavaro in the back of the end zone for a game-winning 18-yard touchdown as the Giants prevailed 23-19. The Giants improved to 4-2 while the Steelers fell to 3-3.

Simms threw for 279 yards and two scores -- both to Bavaro, who had eight catches for 121 yards. Joe Morris had another big day for New York, running for 121 yards. Franco Harris had 120 yards rushing for the Steelers but suffered a critical third-quarter fumble as the Steelers were driving in New York territory.
