Ken Stabler came out of the Oakland huddle at the New England 14-yard line with 47 seconds left in the game.

Fourth-and-5. The Patriots led 24-20. Mike Vrabel was ready.

Stabler tried to hit tight end Dave Casper near the goal line, but Vrabel batted the ball to the turf and the Patriots (2-1) handed the Raiders (2-1) their first defeat in Super League action.

New England had taken the lead midway through the fourth quarter on Corey Dillon's second touchdown run of the day, an eight-yard run up the middle that finished with him plowing through safety Jack Tatum. Dillon -- who had rushed for over 400 yards in New England's first two games -- wasn't quite as dominant on this day, but still finished with 107 yards on 35 carries.

It wasn't surprising Stabler was looking for Casper. He caught eight passes for 121 yards.
