Mean Joe Greene and the '75 Steelers reached the victory column. John Elway and the '98 Broncos must figure out what's wrong with their passing game.
Pittsburgh scored 10 fourth-quarter points to defeat Denver 24-14 in Week 2 Super League action. The Steelers used Franco Harris' 110 rushing yards to overcome three turnovers to improve to 1-1. The Broncos fell to 0-2 as Elway struggled again -- he was 13-for-27 for just 127 yards, a week after going 6-for-18 in a loss to the '72 Dolphins.
The Broncos relied early and often on running back Terrell Davis, who would finish the day with 120 yards on 35 carries. He scored on Denver's opening drive for a 7-0 lead, but the Steelers countered with Harris, who strolled in from 7 yards to tie the game late in the first quarter. The teams exchanged scores in the second quarter, with Elway hitting Ed McCaffrey on a 4-yard TD pass and Terry Bradshaw hitting tight end Larry Brown from 15 yards out to tie the score at halftime.
In the second half, with linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert keying on Davis, the Broncos tried to open up the passing game, but had little success. After Mel Blount picked off Elway late in the third quarter, the Steelers drove 42 yards to the Denver 1, where Rocky Bleier punched it in. Roy Gerela later added a field goal to secure the victory.
