Green Bay defense shuts down Miami

ESPN.com

When fans think of the 1996 Green Bay Packers, they think of Brett Favre and an explosive offense that led the NFL in scoring that season.

The defense isn't too shabby, either. Led by linemen Reggie White, Gilbert Brown, Santana Dotson and Sean Jones, the Packers also allowed the fewest points in the NFL in 1996, and in Week 6 Super League action, they shut down the 1972 Miami Dolphins in a 21-13 victory. The Packers improved to 4-2 while the Dolphins dropped back to 3-3.

Green Bay held Miami's usually strong running game in check, as Larry Csonka had just 45 yards on 24 carries while Mercury Morris averaged a mere 1 yard per carry on 18 attempts. Dotson and Jones also forced Csonka and Morris into first-half fumbles as Green Bay built a 14-3 halftime lead.

Favre threw for 232 yards for the Packers, with Don Beebe going for 106 on the receiving end, including a 23-yard score late in the third quarter that extended Green Bay's lead to 21-6.
