Redskins romp, tied for first

Have you overlooked the 1991 Washington Redskins all Super League season? Don't overlook them now: the Redskins are tied for first.

The Redskins rolled up 480 yards of offense in a 27-17 victory over the 1998 Denver Broncos and, combined with a loss by the 1984 49ers, are now tied for first at 9-5.

Backup running back Ricky Ervins had a huge day for Washington with 143 yards as the Redskins piled up 252 yards on the ground. Gary Clark had seven catches for 117 yards, including a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave Washington a 27-10 lead.

Surprised by the Redskins winning seven out of their last eight games? Don't be. The '91 Redskins went 14-2, losing only by three points to Dallas and two points in the season finale to the Eagles, when they rested their starters in the second half. They led the NFL in scoring and allowed the second-fewest points. The offense led the NFL in rushing attempts but also in average yards per pass attempt.

And now they're showing their stuff in the Super League. The Redskins lost earlier to the '84 49ers, so if the two teams both win in Week 15, the Niners will clinch the regular-season title, but the teams would get a rematch in the Super League championship.
